High Definition Makeup – What Makeup Artists should know about HD Makeup

To understand high definition makeup, we must first understand what ‘high definition’ is. With the onset of digital imaging, high definition refers to the image resolution for photography and videography and television. For full screen viewing on a high-definition television (HDTV 16:9), 1920 x 1080 pixel high-definition (HD) quality photo is needed to perfectly fit a wide-screen HDTV.

High-definition TV sets can project larger images that are 2-5 times the resolution of analog versions.

This also means that everything on screen – the good and the bad – is magnified.

As makeup artists and hairstylists, there is no room for error.

Actually such high quality images are good, but they are a problem if you wish to hide your wrinkles, pimples and open pores because the images capture everything clearly.  However, if you cover everything with thick makeup, it’ll show up on HD image as VERY HEAVY MAKEUP!

To avoid that, HD makeup products have been formulated to be light, but effective in hiding flaws.  They blend into the skin better and soften the overall look.  That is why actors and actresses look so good on tv and the red carpet!

What does HD makeup do?

It covers imperfections, blemishes, and still manage to appear invisible – without looking like you have put lots of concealer on  your skin.

They contain fine particles that blend into the skin and reflect all types of lighting well.  And they are said to create the look of ‘natural’ makeup, like second skin.  HD makeup products contain mica, silicone, crystals, or quartz (tiny light-reflecting particles) that do the work of scattering light subtly to create a soft effect.

Should you change to HD makeup products?

If you are makeup artist and you do makeup for people who spend a lot of time in front of the camera (brides, models, actors), it’s a good idea to consider investing in some HD makeup items.

If you are an individual who does not need to spend time in front of the camera, your usual makeup is sufficient unless you fancy a change.  In fact, a lot of mattifying products, wrinkle- and pore-concealing products have similar ingredients.

If I decide to change to HD makeup, what products should I get?

For a start, get the HD foundation or concealer which has the most camouflaging effect.   A good foundation means you look like you have good skin, and you need less makeup!

Where can I get HD makeup products?

A few companies are selling them:

  • Dior
  • Make Up For Ever

  • Smashbox
  • Givenchy
  • OFFICE Makeup
